Last Sunday I was feeling poorly--"worn out with cares," tired from too little sleep, and possibly feeling a mild virus or bit of food poisoning. So I decided to dispense with a Big Ride--which in the context of the week felt like an obligation--and chose instead to noodle around the neighborhoods with no goal in mind except not to ride less than ten miles, and not to go fast at all.

It's the sort of thing I'll do on magical autumn nights now and then, just whirr through the clear air enjoying the lighted windows, the crickets, the silhouettes of the hills against a luminous sky...so I did it in bright day on a Sunday. My official Big Ride Day.

Just wandering aimlessly along residential streets, not concerned about getting anywhere, or even getting back.

Damn, it was refreshing! If ever a bicycle had an effect similar to a hammock's, it was on a Noodle Ride.

I'm not a relaxed sort of persons, so it was a big step for me to take. Psychologically, much harder than the centuries I've ridden. But fun: I felt so at home on my Noodle Ride.

I incorporated the attitude today on my ride to South Pasadena, a 38-miler with a stop for lunch at the turnaround, and which this time included a stop in Chinatown on the way home to check out restaurants for an outing next Saturuday.

Made a chore stop fun! Noodle Ride...I'm going to order that more often.
