And Fenders Can Be Cool.... Back to all Blogs | Back to rickrise Blog
Just got a compliment from the twentysomething barista at Massimo's Mudspot this morning...she said she'd seen me riding down Olympic yesterday, and that I "looked really cool!"

I thanked her, saying that if I can't be cool, at least I can look cool...good for a chuckle.

For the record, I am gray-bearded and ride bikes with fenders on them. In fact, I was riding my bright-orange psuedo-Motobécane, with the Velo-Orange fenders on it.

So apparently fenders can be cool to the young'uns these days.

I suppose it's not an issue to them at all, that the bike itself, as a whole, just looks "right" to them.

I think it's mostly roadies who are puzzled or even hostile to fenders...after all, fenders indicate "utility," and utility indicates "junk miles."

Or is that "junk thinking" on their part?

Frankly, I'd say miles spent grinding miserably away on a bicycle while heading nowhere, nose to your stem and the scenery all-ablur, might better qualify as "junk miles" than riding somewhere, relaxed and happy, fulfilled in both the journey and the destination.

I remember one roadie who wouldn't ride the South Bay Bike Path because he might get a little sand on his bike.

I've ridden that path several hundred times, and never worn a component out yet. And if I had, the sky, wind, waves, bikinis, all would be worth it.

'Course my fenders help keep sand out of the running gear, heh heh heh....
