Pros
Good value bike without having to make compromises in critical components, like brakes.
Cons
While the bike lives up to its "all mountain" billing, it's better suited to less technical trail riding.
Bottom Line
Competitively priced entry to mid level mountain bike with a component package that'll let you advance without worrying about upgrading parts too soon.

The Kona Blast Deluxe benefits from the same frame technology as its more expensive brother, the Kona Caldera. A sloping top tube and Kona's XC/BC riser bars make for more relaxed geometry than you might expect from a hardtail, adding to the Blast Deluxe's reputation as a "back country" hardtail.

Unlike the Blast, the Blast Deluxe benefits from hydraulic brakes that bring a little more feel and accuracy than mechanical brakes, and are a worthwhile upgrade. The wheels sport Alex Ace-18 rims with a Shimano M475 rear disc hub. They have a sturdy feel to them, and clad with Maxxis Ignitor tires fared well with cornering in wet conditions and shedding mud.

The drivetrain is largely Shimano Deore. The only exceptions are the FSA Alpha Drive Exo Powerdrive crankset and bottom bracket combination that proved to be responsive and stiff for efficient transfer of power.

The Blast Deluxe is an excellent entry level hardtail. Its geometry allows you to take longer routes while the bike's suspension is capable of more than just hardpack or fire road riding. The Kona Blast Deluxe climbs well - as you might expect from a hardtail - and handles neatly on the descents.
