How to Replace Bike Threaded Freewheels Back to How To
What does a freewheel do?
A freewheel makes it possible to coast on a bike. When you are pedaling, the freewheel engages the sprockets, but it allows the rear wheel to turn when the pedals are at rest.
When do I need to replace my freewheel?
Because the freewheel is not a load-bearing mechanism, replacing it is not often necessary. However, if you find the freewheel is excessively noisy or is not performing its function, a replacement may be in order. Tearing apart a freewheel for maintenance is not generally recommended, as the hassle tends to outweigh the cost of a simple replacement.
Tools Needed
- A bicycle stand is always recommended
- A special tool designed specifically for your particular freewheel, known as a “freewheel puller”
- An adjustable wrench compatible with the hexagonal section of your freewheel puller
- You may need a bench-mounted vice for particularly stubborn freewheels
1.
Remove the rear wheel of the bicycle.
2.
Remove the quick release skewer or axle nut on the freewheel side.
3.
Look at the center of the freewheel and choose a freewheel puller which corresponds to the notches on the freewheel.
4.
Place the freewheel puller into the notches on the freewheel and replace the skewer or axle nut.
5.
Use your adjustable wrench to loosen the freewheel about one whole turn.
6.
Remove the skewer or axle nut, and finish removal with your freewheel puller and adjustable wrench.
You Should Know
Some freewheels become so stuck after time it may be necessary to secure the freewheel puller with the skewer or axle nut and then place the puller into a mounted vice. Turning the whole wheel usually gives enough mechanical advantage to loosen the freewheel. Don’t forget to remove the skewer or axle nut before attempting to completely unscrew the freewheel!
