How to Loosen Stiff Bike Chain Links Back to How To
How do I know if I have a stiff chain link?
If you hear a clicking noise, or notice a skip in the chain every few rotations of the pedals, you probably have a stiff chain link. This problem is most often located at the point where the chain was closed.
When can I loosen a stiff chain link?
You will find two basic methods for loosening chain links below. One requires no tools, and the other requires a special tool known as a chain breaker. The methods below will loosen a stiff link, but if you notice the plates in your chain are bent, it is time for a replacement.
Tools Needed
- Bike stands are a great investment for any level of bicycle mechanic
- You may need a chain breaker if the link cannot be loosened by hand
How do I find a stiff link?
To identify the culprit, slowly pedal backwards while watching the rear derailleur. The stiff link will usually make itself obvious as it skips through the pulleys in the rear derailleur.
How do I loosen a stiff link?
Identify the stiff chain link and use one of the two methods introduced here to solve the problem. If the problem is still not solved you might need a new chain.
1.
Start by identifying the stiff chain link.
2.
Try grabbing the chain on either side of the stiff link and working it up and down horizontally, greatly exaggerating the natural movement of the chain.
3.
Holding the chain on either side or plate of the stiff link, flex the chain laterally.
4.
If the problem is not solved, you will have to use a chain breaker.
5.
Place the chain in the chain breaker and turn the handle about 1/8 of a rotation after making contact with the pin of the stiff link.
6.
Try another 1/8 of a turn if the stiff link is still not loosened.
7.
It may seem counter-intuitive, but repeating this process on the other side of the chain will sometimes solve the problem.
8.
If nothing works, the plates of the chain may be bent, which means you will need to purchase a replacement link or new chain.
